Quincy-Howe papers, 1797-1944.

Papers of the interrelated Quincy and Howe families, including family correspondence among Josiah Quincy III (1772-1864), Eliza Susan Quincy, Josiah Quincy IV (1802-1882), Josiah P. Quincy, and Helen Frances "Fanny" (Huntington) Quincy. Josiah Quincy IV's papers include letters to his wife describing trips to the South and Midwest (1844-187?). Josiah P. Quincy's papers include letters to his wife Helen Frances (Huntington) Quincy from Washington, D.C., Labrador, Cuba, and the Azores, and a journal kept in the Azores from 29 May - 17 June 188-?. Additional papers include commonplace-books kept by Fanny Huntington (later Quincy) and Eliza Susan Quincy; a memoir of the Quincy family by Eliza (1823); numerous genealogical materials; and correspondence of Mark A. DeWolfe Howe, Frances Huntington (Quincy) Howe, and other members of the Quincy and Huntington families.

Eliza Susan Quincy (1798-1884) was the daughter of Josiah Quincy (1772-1864), congressman, Massachusetts state senator, and president of Harvard University. Her great-grandfather was Colonel Josiah Quincy (1710-1784). His fortune was increased when the merchant vessel Bethell, of which he was part owner, captured a Spanish treasure ship.
